Following a successful clutch change to my mini, i drove it down the road a couple of times to test it and the clutch is much nicer than before, but the next time i drove it i got halfway down the road and it died on me :ermm:

i am worried i might have wired up the ignition coil wrongly, when try to start it the starter moter runs fine but the engine chokes once and dies, i have a voltmeter thingy but have no idea how to use it because it has so many settings, how do i test to see if the coil is working and how do i know which wires go where? as none of them are labled :w00t:

any help appreciated

sorry to say this but.....get a haynes manual!

just had a look at a wiring diagram for a post 1984 mini, coil wiring should be :ermm:

2 wires going to the positive side - white/yellow and white/pink
2 wires going to the negative side - both white/black

to test the coil, haynes says to set the multilmeter to "resistence". put one of the tester points on the "+" side of the coil and the other on the HT lead terminal on the coil. if you get a reading between 5 and 15 kohms, the coild is OK. you can also put the tester across the "+" and "-" terminals of the coil but haynes doesn't state what the reading should be.

They are labled, that's why they're different colours. The colour code is a proper British Standard. What did you expect, little engraved name plates? :ermm: It's quite easy to work out exactly what wire goes where once you know the basics of the colour code. Test if the coil is working by connecting the car up to it and starting the engine! Of course Haynes says what the primary resistance should be, it's in the test data at the start of the chapter. There's loads of primary resistances depending on which coil you are using so I won't list them here, look it up.
