Im still trying to remove the pinion gear retaining nut. Today we applied over 400 ft lbs and nothing budged and I am worried about something snapping.

it will shift eventually, keep persevering if you can borrow a 3/4 drive on a long bar it will undo try sleeving the bar with a length of steel pipe like a piece of scaffolding just dont use and impact wrench as that will break the teeth. The trick is (i) make sure the box cannot move two burly mates or pin the box against a wall or I have seen people jacking a car up and parking it on the box to stop it from moving then (ii) enough force as in the long bar with even pressure to undo the nut.

Keep the faith loads of people have had the same problem your experiencing.

How have you locked the box to stop it from turning? two gears at once?

Question is how do you know you've applied 400ftlb or torque....

and if you have, ditch the box anyway as the mainshaft will probably already have stress fractures.

I locked it in fourth then my father used a chain wrench to grip the first motion shaft. We used this method as it is unlikely to damage good gears due to the multiplication of torque on them. We applied a lot of torque and it wasn't budging so we decided to see how much we might be applying so he stood on a lever about two and a half feet from the first motion and he weighs 150 lb's. So if I lifted him by applying torque to the retaining nut it would equal about 400 ft lbs

your going to struggle and probably hurt someone using that method, if its an early remote box remove the speedo drive housing then remove the gear selector gate (the jaw like thingy that prevents multiple gear selection) you can then select two gears at once. Push the selectors for 1st and 4th into the box this will lock it solid you can then undo the pinion nut as described, Reassembly is the reverse

if its a later rod change box follow -
