I have just replaced my 45amp alternator for a 55amp after being told on here it would be fine, I have just tried to start her and she is turning over and everything but won't spark into life, also the little red light that shows oil pressure has came on and won't go off

Logic tells us you have disturbed some cables while fitting the alternator....

Okay I will go look at all the cables! Is there anything else it could be?

My thought also, literally look at everything you have touched while fitting the new alternator.

Well, you can unplug the new alternator and check that it is not causing the problem....

If not, you must have moved a cable off the coil, dizzy, etc.

The red light is the alternator charging light not the oil light, I would check for any wires you may have disturbed on the coil, have you checked for spark at the plugs?

What engine are we talking about? electronic/points?

It's a 998 and it's running but only when I remove the bottom cable from the alternator (i think it's the earth) what does this mean? Will my battery not be charging anymore?

Bottom cable? You should have 1 large plug with three terminals for your alternator, and it shouldn't be earthed by a cable at all. What Mini is this? What colour cables are there?

Dan,
It's a mini thirty and there is the main plug with the three wires running to it and there is a singular cable below it (black and yellow)

Threads merged, please don't start numerous threads about the same problem.

There are no black / yellow cables on a Mini 30! Can you trace where it goes?

At a guess I'm wondering if its a discoloured black/white.

The car hasn't been retro fitted with electronic ignition at any point as it ????
If that's the case it may be the old cable to the points ??? And no longer needed which would explain why it cuts out you'll be earthing the coil stopping the spark

It is a discoloured white and black leading into a rolled tape of wires... When I connect this to the alternator it's cuts the engine, and when I put a volt meter on the battery when it's running it reads 11.77 volts (same when it's switched off)
