Hi, Ive split my engine from gearbox and stripped it. The casing number is 22G68. Ive found conflicting information on what type it is (A or B). Could someone set the record straight and provide some information on how I might positively identify it. Also I need to get spares for it so am looking for information on where I might acquire them and a list of part numbers. Specifically the laygear, first gear, input gear, and first motion shaft.

The difference between the two is the angle of the gear helix.

Type A will generally run on bushes, where as type B run on rollers.

Early type A will be cone synchro's and then changed to baulkring.

Ideally you need to get the part number of the laygear, this will tell you what gearset you have and also the part number of the gears which will then be related to that laygear. Problem is, new parts are hard to come by, occasionally you may see the odd one or two NOS parts on ebay, but these are usually singular and more often than not, useless unless that's the only part you need. Even good second hand parts are getting rare so it becomes more economical to actually find a gearbox with good gears, rather than trying to source individual parts to repair a damage gearbox.

If the gearbox is, as your name suggests, a 1963 vintage, then it is likely to be an A type baulkring 3 synchro, unfortunately the 22G68 case was used for both A and B type gearboxes, so that does not help.

I have a PDF detailing the part number of the laygears in all MK1 g/b's but I don't know how to display it on here. If you give me the number on yours I can tell you if it is A or B. There is a choice of five laygears in the 22G68 'box.

In fact it is easier this way: If it is 22A381 or 22G76 it is A type. Anything else it's B type. Hope this helps.

The part number should be stamped between 3rd and 4th gear. You can just make it out on mine in this photo.

Simply using production part numbers is no garuntee of what gears are fitted as an update kit to B type gears was sold by BMC. Best just look at the syncro system.

This does seem to be a bit of a hybrid because the G40 laygear was fitted to the cone syncro magic wand G/B in a 22A104 casing.

You need to strip the 'box to see if it is cone or baulk ring syncro and if the gears run on bushes or rollers.

I striped the third motion shaft and yes it runs on bushes not rollers so it's a type. Now, the impossible task of trying to find spares. Any ideas?
