Hello getting to the stage in my project where i'm getting close to finishing the exterior and interior bits and being satisfied on how my mini looks. and want to move on to increasing and improving its performance.

Problem being i feel like i'm going hard on my 998cc engine (not helped by the wight I've added >_< in new shiny bits) and the fact that the most time i'm in 5000 Rpm to move at normal pace or at least accelerate a bit.( sounds like its screaming its ******* off when other cars can just swoosh by at relatively normal speeds 40-60 not making a sound) witch is a bit :shy: and also worrying as i think its a good 998 engine and don't want to break it :( & also attending more track events so looking for a bit more poke.

So i'm wondering about a swapping to a 1275. i've never done any engine or proper performance modifications before so iv got a lot to learn and i'am a long way off getting one. so was wondering on a few basic questions?
  • One being engine Spec's am i right in saying a standard 998 with a bit off dyno tuning turns out around 30-40 BHP??
  • What can a standard 1275 Turn out BHP wise?? i understand their is a ton off different 1275 models and Possible turn outs just need a rough idea or other peoples results :techsupport: on standard engines??
  • is it possible to lift a mini engine by hand i.e with a few people (only want to know if i have to collect wasn't planning on just picking it up and throwing it in the bay ;D )
  • more importantly what should i look for when buying a engine that not fitted/ running?
  • a 1275 has a bit more tongue but dose that make a considerable difference compered to a 998? so change in 0 to 60 and top end ?? (again i know different models have different figures)
Any help be much appreciated Thanks Tom

:) that sounds good do 1275 metro engines fit the same as mini engines?? I know they look similar to mini engines ? But is their any specific extra modifications to make a 1275 metro engine fit a mini ?? Thanks

I've heard people say a well tuned 998 with a few modifications has just as much power as a 1275.

Yerh heard this too. But thought it would still be a lot off strain on a small engine. When u could get something similar in modified. Not too sure tho :/

You will spend about the same getting a 998 to produce the same if not a bit more than a standard 1275, where as if you spent that money on tuning a 1275 you could be getting on for about 90-100 bhp which will make for a quick little car,

My 998 I have currently is staying whilst I rebuild a 1275 which I am going to bore out, fit a hot cam, ported head, and aiming for 100 bhp which will cost I am estimating £1500 all in for new components, machining work, and performance mods, yes I could to this to my 998 but it will cost about the same and would be cheaper buying a standard 1275 in good condition :)

Great help Alex :) 1275 looks like a better future investment, sounds like a sweet set up for £1500 by the way :0!

a lot depends on how much you have to spend. It would not be wise to buy a 1275 engine and gearbox that you haven't seen running, done tests on and know the history of and then install it, unless of course your finances dictate this. If on the other hand money is not an issue then there are a few good engine builders around that will see you right. However the middle road would be to buy a 1275 engine and gearbox and rebuild it yourself with help if you can get it.
