No not really. You can tell if they are from the right period, as there were many small differences to the subframe spec over the years as well as the few major changes. You can tell if they are genuine or not too obviously.

You may get some clue from the fixing bolts. If the rear subframe was changed, it would be rare for these to have not partially siezed, and if the original bolts have been used, they will have severe spanner marks in the unscrewing direction. On older cars, the bolts will be Grade S, instead of 8.8 (same strength, but BS spec instead of ISO) so you may be able to tell that they are original, and if unmarked, it most likely has never been out.

Unfortunately I don't know when production shifted fron Grade S to 8.8 bolts.

Sometimes, you may find the remnants of a paper label on the subframe, which may tell you something.

The front subframe is likley to be original as it is not very common to need to change one of those.

Look for MOWOG stamped into the metal, if it has that it is a genuine subframe. Doesn't mean its the original one though.

MOWOG was usually stencilled onto subframes in white or yellow paint rather than stamped in.

Thinking about it, the rear frame from the factory has 2 3" square horsehair pads above it, this would be something to look for. It still won't tell you anything for sure as people could fit their own but most people aren't insane enough to bother with them.

Are you sure? Every time I have seen it is has been stamped in, as it is on BMH ones now. Never seen it painted on.

Actually you are right, it is stamped on top of the webs isn't it? But on production line frames that I have removed it was also painted on the hidden front face of the front member of a rear frame, and somewhere similar on a front one.

Dan, that's correct.

My '66 has both original subframes, the front having "MOWOG" sprayed in yellow on the front bar exactly as you describe!
