From what i've read, this is an HIF type carb.

Is there a real simple way to tell the difference between 38's and 44's ?

I believe that the difference is in the size of the hole where the air/fuel mix enters the inlet manifold,
38 and 44 refer to the size of this 'hole' in mm

I think that's the main one, but I'm sure that someone else more qualified will be along in a moment :proud:

Rob

Edit: I think the jet size differs between the two as well.

Yes they measure 38mm at the throtle end and 44mm, also the 38 has the same carb elbow(were the filter case is screwed on)as the HS4 carb and the HIF44 has a larger one.
HIF44 carb mouth also measures 44mm it's like a straight pipe.
HIF38 takes 0.090 needles and HIF44 takes the 0.100 needles, jets also are of different size.

Cheers guys, It's an HIF 44 with a BDR needle

As it's been uprated to a stage 1 kit what would be the preference on needle ?

Depending on what air assembly you have, can determine what profile needle you will need for best performance. I've read that a BDL is a good option with a Cone type filter, not to sure about others.

It's a K&N cone filter, want it to be a daily driver, so nothing silly needed

I'd go for a BDL then pal. It's a good starting point for a HIF44, until you get it on the rollers, then they will either change or modify the needle for best results in smoothness through all gears
