Thanks

Anyone?
I figured this was going to be a quick answer.
Hoping to buy a shift knob very soon but need to know what thread to tell him to make it.
I tried searching google but couldn't find anything that way.
Any help is appreciated.

I think it is one of the rare cases of a Whitworth thread on a Mini, as a coarse thread is usual in plastic mouldings. You should measure its diameter, which will be 1/4" or 5/16", over the threads as a check.

Just had a look on another thread and it would appear to be 5/16" UNC.

I can't check. I don't have a shifter yet. My car is still in pieces in the garage. (bought as a shell so no shifter). Probably going to buy an aftermarket shifter but i assume they will be the same thread. If I had the shifter to check I probably would have ordered my shift knob last night.

Erm yes, that was my thread originally. I bought a 5/16" UNC nut as a result of it, to lock against the bottom if the gear knob to keep the knob facing the right way around. The nut didn't fit though, so I'm not sure if the info was actually incorrect, or if I was just sold a nut with the wrong sized thread!

So in that case was the nut too large or was the thread too coarse and maybe should have been a UNF thread?? But saying that i would have thought Steve would be right as he makes Gear knobs as part of the DSN Classics range.

5/16" Whitworth and UNC are sort of interchangeable for low stress applications like that, which is why you may be supplied with a UNC thread nowadays, although the original was actually Whitworth. A close tolerance nut may not be able to fit on the "wrong" thread, although a low grade loosely machined nut usually will.

The other place that you find a mix of Whitworth and UNC is on the tripod thread in cameras, in that case 1/4". All new ones are UNC, all old ones Whitworth, and they fit, sort of.

As the thread angle is different, you must not mix them in stressed applications!
