Could someone give me an idea of what a 1275 Metro engine and gearbox could be worth,50k and running.

When you say "running", do you mean just that it run's, or that it's still in the car and can be hear running before buying? This is the fundamental difference, if it can be heard running then it's probably worth around the £350-£400 mark. If it's out of the car though, then it really is a gamble for any prospective buyer and therefore most people will want to pay around half that amount, as they don't know what they're getting until they've either stripped it down, or fitted it.
