Both my Minis are leaking coolant at quite a fast rate. Can't locate the precise source of the leaks but I can see the fluids running down the alternator (dynamo) mounting bracket, then down the front side and front of the engine. Is this probably a water pump problem, it seems to originate somewhere in that area?

sounds like either the thermostat housing gasket, top hose, water pump gasket or head gasket.

I've had a leak from the side of my radiator which left coolant over the alternator. A new radiator was all I needed, and takes half an hour to fit.

First I'd check the top hose, second make sure your temperature sender is screwed into the cylinder head properly (yes I've seen people lose water like that without realising). Those two would be the cheap solutions. Also check the thermostat housing gaskets (that triangular thing that the top hose goes into in the cylinder head).

If it's coming out of the radiator you should be able to see it when the engine's running by lookin in the engine bay. If not it could well be the water pump gasket (rather than there actually being any prolem with the pump).

I'd wager its leaking from either the thermostat housing or water pump gasket.

New radiator on one last fall and no visual on leak at thermo housings. Going to replace thermostat with summer one so that'll be checked. Looks like I'll be digging in a little deeper. Pump gasket l0oks like a prime suspect.

Thanks,

I went ahead and removed the pump from my car and evidence seems to indicate it is leaking out the hole in the bottom of the pump. Looking closely at my wife's car I can see the fluid running down the inside of the pump pulley which indicates to me that it is the same problem. Thanks to eveyone.
