I've just tried to fit the gear level in to the linkage on my sons 94 1275 mini 35 and despite making sure the fixing collar is properly rotated to secure it, the gear level will engage the linkage to the gearbox but swivels around. I know from our other mini that this is not correct. the engine is not running so cannot fully check out the functions but the connecting rod end has a large locating hole for the lever which is smaller at one side does this matter when inserting the lever. any advice would be helpful.Steve

The locating hole in the rod inside the remote alloy housing is tapered - this is what you describe as smaller one side. The 'larger hole side' is the one to insert the lever into. Rotate the rod so the 'larger diameter' is pointing vertical. Then insert the lever into this hole in the connecting.
There is a slot on the upper ball that needs to engage with the pin on the side ( this stops the lever rotating).
Finally push down the retaining cup and engage the bayonet fitting to the 2 pins on the remote housing turret.
Hope this helps

I had this once and it was simply that the pin (as mentioned above) had come loose and popped out so the lever could rotate. If you hold the lever firmly to prevent it from rotating you can change gear as normal. Try this to confirm the missing pin is the problem.
