Ok guys, I have a problem that is really doing my nut in trying to solve!!!
When we got the car we found a problem selecting reverse gear, found that the slot in the bottom of the gear was P shaped! Worn by the roll pin. So we replaced the gear stick and the selector housing.
This did not solve the problem! When you lifted the gear stick to select reverse it didnt seem to want to move over, and when it did, the gearstick would rotates 360 degs!
Only when you pulled it back round would it pop back in.
Now we decided to rebuild the gearbox, and found the lug on the selector pin was loose, so replaced it and put it all back together, all gears selected perfect on the bench.
Engine back in and it is still not right! Lift the gear stick and it seems to come above the roll pin allowing it to rotate. Inside the housing looks ok and no wear on the stick.
Any ideas? Anyone had this sort of problem before?

This is the gear stick in the normal position

Lift it and try and select reverse.... and this happens! Yes, it is facing the passenger door!!

Is the plate on the bottom of the selector housing held on with a bout 8 or so screws on round the right way?

I think so, the housing was swapped for another one when it first did it, chances of them both being on wrong would be slim

Not using an older type quickshift cup with a regular gearstick are you? That would let it lift higher I think.
Are the pins (they shouldn't be roll pins, they are specific parts) pushed in far enough? Specifically the longer one obviously. It should only have the same amount protruding outside the housing as the small pin does.

The pins look ok. The wrong cup was suggested by someone, I had a look on minispares and only found the one type, but i take it there is more than one?? How can I tell? Other than borrow someone elses

I had this problem and like dan says make sure the pins that hold the cup down are pushed in far enough.
There should be a slot in the ball on the gear stick that this goes in hope this helps.

Solved!!! Got another gear stick and this pointed out that the top of the one I had was worn! The slot was a lot shallower! An easy fix thankfully! Can now get on with all the other problems!! LOL
Cheers for all the input guys

I think I can solve this straight away..
The spring which stops the gear stick lifting unles you pull it up for reverse must be too short. When I fitted my short shift gear stick I cut the spring too short and had the same problem. The chances are the last person had one on and took it off before you bought it, but because the spring had been cut it's too short for the standard stick.
Hope that helps! :)

It's just a standard stick, with the spring locked in place, must have just been a well used one!! The one fitted now is a LOT better!
