Me again.

Well the electrics are now all sorted on the mini and every thing works a treat.

Now onto the the little drama, to get her to fire up i have to take the air filter off and have a mate to stick his hands over the SU carb to suffocate it before she eventually bursts into life.

Do any of you know what this could be? Best things to check etc etc

Many thanks

sounds like running very weak / air leak, or choke not operating.

It's very lean. Is the choke lever on the carb returning fully to rest with the cable in? And pulling out properly? When was it last serviced?

Fail.

In addition to the above I assume the ignition timings not retarded?

It'd ritchen up the mix and see if that helps. Failing that, get a mate to pull the choke, and you watch the mechanism on the carb, to see how much it actually does, you can alter the impact that the choke has on the revs and mix there

Before changing anything on the carb, check for air leaks everywhere and look for anything broken or not working. Does the car have a brake servo? Applying a fix before you actually identify the problem will only make everything worse in the long run.

I change my mind and agree with this now. Something maybe like the exhaust manifold gasket

Main intake gaskets draw air and any rubber hoses should be checked, and even down to the vacuum pipe to the distributor and then vacuum advance unit, check the SU to inlet gasket and if you have a servo the pipe and down to the servo unit
