Hi guys, been trying to get the mini running smoothly but I have a slight issue.

I've replaced the points, dizzy cap, plugs, and HT leads and today cleaned out the carb (hif44).

However, it still bogs down when I press the accelerator. It happens when I drive as well, but if I ease on the pedal slowly it seems fine.

Any ideas what it could be?

OK, will go grab myself some 3 in 1 from town at lunch and give it a go. Thanks!

Also might be worth checking the vacuum advance is working.
A slight leak will mean poor acceleration under load.

Be better off starting with the correct 20/50.........

Will do, I've always used 3 in 1, is that not correct then?

I immediately thought of the vacuum advance pipe - may be worth trying a new one.

OK, so plan for tonight is to tape up anything on the vacuum advance pipe that could leak, check that it's creating a vacuum and put some oil in the dashpot!

That will at least point me in the right direction.

I've not worked on my car for about two years and I feel like I've forgotten it all!!

Have you done a base setting idle mixture check to make sure its just not running weak through the range, have you got access to a C/O Meter? If so check the mixture at idle warmed up and you looking for approx 3% C/O. I you dont have access to a C/O meter then use the lifting pin on the side, lift it slightly and if the revs falter and drop down its to waek, it should slightly rev and resettle

Progress from today;

Taped up the vacuum advance and filled the dashpot with oil, this improved things, but not completely.

I then did the valve clearances which again improved things, but not completely.

Next up I'm going to try and set the mixture as I can only think that's what the problem is.

Hi, I had a very similar problem to this a while back, bogging under acceleration but fine when you slowly build up the revs. I ended up replacing a number of parts (mainly for good measure as the car was stored for years by a previous owner) I replaced the points, condenser, plugs, dizzy cap and ht leads, topped up dashpot and adjusted fuel mixture. Have you replaced the condenser ? The only other thing I did was was drain all the old fuel as it had been sat in it for years while stored, and a fuel filter.
I did all this at once so I'm not sure which one cured the problem :-S but deffinatly replace the condenser if you haven't already, I always do mine when replacing the points :-) and make sure the gap on the points is correct !
Sorry I can't be of more help !

Yeah, I replaced the points, condenser, plugs and HT leads. I'll have a go with the mixture when I next manage to get up there and see if that fixes it.

I had this same issue with my mates 998cc. He had left it since December I think parked up, most of the time outside. He went to drive it last week, and it coughed into life, but apart from a fuel leak at the pump end, it bogged down lots.

I checked it, and found both clips on the fuel pipe pretty much undone, which is odd, but anyway that cured the leak! It still bogged down, so I took the spark plugs out, they were very sooty, so cleaned them up with a wire brush, checked the points gap, and condition of the rotor and cap, and points, they were all ok. Assume leads were fine. Topped up dashpot with Penrite Carb Oil.

The only changes made were the spark plug clean and dash pot oil, it then ran like a dream!
