Not really mechanical, I think I will be traveling back and foreward to cardiff alot 1 and a half hour trip on the motorway.

Just wanted to know the most economical speed to drive a '78 988 at for fuel efficency.

I should have expected this, I don't think the girl I am hoping to give a seeing to will be happy about the AA driver hanging around

on a serious not i just drove from cardiff to plymouth with 2 large teenage boys and there kit for the summer term verging the car on max capacity, i reacon i averaged about 55 mph and made about 47 mpg. and i then drove back just me and a small suitcase and i was averaging about 70mph overall, (its all downhill from plymouth to Somerset so managed roughly) i think i got a similar figure possibly 50 mpg.

ive got a 998 which has recently been tuned and i ran it on premium on the way back if it makes any difference. if your serious about saving fuel get your car tuned, a performance exhaust may help efficiency providing you get the car set up well.

It should be around 2700rpm where the 998cc makes it most torque

Flat out! You'll be so excited with the drive that by the time you get there the expense won't matter. You will also get to see the girl sooner. Result all round. P.S. start saving for a larger bore engine. more speed.

THe most economical way to drive is not a steady speed apparently. Accelerate to 90, coast to 60, repeat.

The safest way to drive is to match the speed of surrounding vehicles.

Just stick behind a truck, and wait for a faster truck to come along and then go behind that, in the end you will normally end up behind one doing over 60, and by doing this i managed to get close to 70mpg from my stage one 998 (once haha), normally get 50+ mpg though.

I'd like to see you even get a 998 to 90 which might be a problem

My 998 could just about do 90 but that was right at the top of the Rev range and so hardly economical

My 84 manual says 56 when they tested it...but if ur following another car to break the wind resistance a little may do just as good

Well 56mph is a a good starting speed because wind resistance increases at a roughly linear rate up until that speed. Past that the wind resistance increases exponentially. Its why you need 1000bhp to get to 250mph but only around 180bhp to get to 150mph!

However in reality your car will be its most economical in its highest gear at an engine speed around peak torque. Which is around 3000rpm with standard cams. I think that does equate to about 60mph in most Minis.

to be honest i got around 40mpg in my mini not really trying to be economical. You'd have to have a ridiculously tuned or very poorly mini not to get good mpg!
