I'm looking at buying an Austin Mini 1000 soon but it has no rear seat belts as it was built in 1977 so they were not mandatory. I'm looking to have some retrofitted but wondered if anyone knew the insurance side of this? i.e. if the welding was to break in the event of an accident (highly unlikely I hope) and thus someone was to be injured more would the insurers refuse to pay out? Or would they treat it as if there were no seat belt, like there wasn't originally?

Cheers,
Sam

The welds that hold the seat belt attachment plates from the factory were not that great. The centre plate had a few seam welds while each side at the bottom had a bracket that was spot welded in place along with some very heavy tacks.

So retro fitting these on the bulkhead as long as you do some decent welds should not give any issues. The upper attachment on the rear window pillar is something else and will need some metal welding in place along with the attachment point.( have a look under the cover as you may find they are in there already)

A kit of the genuine type original attachment plates for all three positions is available from Somerford and possibly other dealers. Already pressed to shape, with seatbelt nuts welded in, and just need welding in place as original. They also now have the rear seat reel mounting brackets for fitting inertia belts in the rear but these aren't in the kit.

Sorry to bring up this old post, but what do you mean by the rear seat reel mounting brackets?

I am trying to add rear seat belts to my Inno and finding a mess of information.
