When I stripped the interior out of the car, there was a large moulded rubber backed foam underlay that was seated in the front footwell and Up the bulkhead behind the pedals. My dad is adement this was a "fire retardant" underlay matting of some sort. Can anyone help me? I can find it anywhere, or anything similar?

It is sound deadening. It's heavy rubber backing with a "chip foam" layer. Very effective panel deadened and sound barrier. If you want quiet then put it back. In no way is it fire retardant.

This was my understanding. Unfortunately it was rotten and ruined so it was chucked. Can you buy them anywhere?

Original trim like this is almost impossible to find.  Try Somerford, they might have some.  If not there are other underlay kits available but they don't have the heavy rubber backing.

Thanks Dan, I've got the newton commercial carpet and underlay set, but it's no where near as thick, and as you said, without the rubber backing. Many thanks.

Try classicminbits.co.uk he strips minis for spares and second hand will be your best bet. Othewise have a look on ebay for some dynomat (expensive) or silentcoat (budget)

I've bought some closed cell foam underlay/mat that I have put in the back. Just think the moulded rubber backed bit would be good in the front.

All it really does is hold water against the floor and bulkhead causing rust, which closed cell foam won't do.  It's easier to fit because it's moulded but it's also very heavy.  The reason it stops sound is that it has the density change where the heavy rubber is bonded to the light rubber, it fits tightly and covers all the holes and overlaps the seams.  You could easily do a similar thing by bonding some heavier rubber sheet to the closed cell foam.  Or go to Noisekiller's website and look at their bulk materials rather than kits.  They have a wide variety of this sort of sandwich material available.
