Is it legal to take this cover out even though the car I'm picking up is not mine?

Yes it is legal, i just got 2 weeks cover on my brothers car through day insure cost me £230 but that's because of being 21.
AVOID SWINTON! I rang them for a 7 day free insurance they offer...load of BS, rude, unhelpful, patronizing foreigner on the other side of the phone.

how much tax is left on the car? If its not much as long as the car is kept on private land ( your driveway) then once the tax has nearly ran out you will get a letter through to re-tax your car and from there you can sorn it online:pThanks for help, as I'am insuring the car for 1 day, i will be taking it off the road afterwards so i will have to sorn the car? You can do it online. You may need the V5 reference number to do it though so when you sign the paper work just make a note of the numbers on the front cover of it. They may be on the green slip you get but I'm not sure.
I did it online when I bought my micra for my uni project. I explained what I was buying the car for to the guy I bought it off and he gave me a Photostat of the V5 document so I had all the information.
I can't remember who I insured it with.
Just beware though. Your excess is very high. Mine was something like 2 grand but then it only cost me £25 for the day to insure it.

I found it was very expensive until 25 or over , some places wouldn't insure me on temp,
