If its that bad sounds like you have a problem. I get about 45mpg from my spi cooper.

Just done my usual uni commute from birmingham to cov uni and back again its about 38 mile round trip. Its pretty much a straight 60mph run for most of it. i seem to get bad fuel consumption when i have to go fast used about 1/4 of a tank up 2day. Just wondered if this was normal for a 998.
Depends, which 1/4 of the gauge are we talking about? The gauge isn't very linear or accurate (or good really). In a good condition late 998 you should get about 55 mpg at a constant 55 mph in 4th. You need to know some of the numbers to work out your fuel consumption, saying 1/4 of a tank is a bit vague.

Fill your car up at the local gararage and try to do it in a way you can repeat again. So if you say put the nossel into the tank as far as you can and then fill untill it cuts out. As soon as it cuts out stop. Tank a note of the milage. Then drive the car as normal untill next time you need to refill. The longer the better as is will give you a better average. Then refill at the same garage with the same pump using the same technique so in theory you should fill it to a similar level. Take a note of your new millage
The take the no of litres you have put in the second time and devide by 4.5 to convert to gallons
(4.5 litres = 1 uk gallon)
So if you put 22.5 litres in when you re fule thats 5 gallons
Then take your new milage and subtract the old one to get how far you have driven inbetween filling up
(Say you have done 180 miles between filling up)
Then devide the 180 miles by the 5 gallons of petrol you have used to get the MPG which in theis case is 36MPG
The advantage of this method is if you do it every time you fill up you will notice if your fuel consuption changes and this might highlight a problem. Even if you dont use the same petrol station it will give you an indication of the MPG your getting.
The other option (which might be more acurate but the first is what i would recomend) is to drive (with a can of 4.5 litres of petrol in the boot) till you run out. Then pour the spare fuel in (being carefull not to spill any) and take a not of your milage. Then drive to a garage and fill up taking a not of how much fuel you put in (and fill up your spare can again too) then drive till you run out of fuel again. Add the 4.5 liters of spare fuel to what you put in when you filled up to get the total amount of fuel in litres and then devide this total by 4.5 to get it in gallons. Then devide the milage you have done since the first time you ran out of fuel by the number of gallons to get the MPG.
