I have recently purchased a Cometic head gasket. Is there anything special that needs to be done ie machining block or head when fitting these multi layered gaskets, or do you fit them like any other?

Not know what application the engine is ? Is there a reason why you bought a Comteic gasket over the proven Payen for the A Series ?
If you do a search here you will see others who have used different types of gaskets other than payen and have head gasket issues and had to re do the job again.

with the steel layered gaskets you should have a nice smooth head and block surface, preferably surface ground.
