Hello firslty sorry for asking this but ive been searching the web for a while now and cant find the answers i need.

My mini is a Rover City 1000 (998cc) year 1990

Bought it the other day and on the test drive it ran out of fuel. Put some fuel it drove it home left it stood an hour, went to drive it and it wouldnt start again.

My first guess is when it ran out of fuel all the crap in the bottom of the bank would have been sucked through and clogged up the filter? But i dont even know if this model has a fuel filter or where abouts it is?

Anybody else had this problem before and know if its a easy fix? Other wise ill have to start looking for a spark and at the pointers etc

(sorry for my lack of knowledge but i dont have a haynes manual to hand and no access to the mini till next week)

Many many thanks simon

Don't be sorry for asking questions ;-)

Running out of fuel could be a coincidence. It could be a cold starting issue for example.

Was the engine hot before you went for the test drive?

No, the engine was cold and started first time. It started fine for the test run, Again before I drove it home and again at the fuel station :/

Please don't be offended by this question, you would be amazed how often this happens with people new to Minis (I don't know if you are)  anyway..

You are pulling the choke, not the heater control knob?

Anyway, If you want to check your getting fuel through to the carb you can take the fule line off the carb and poke it into a milk bottle whilst someone turns the engine over. Fuel should squirt into the bottle. This is potentially a dangerous test by the way so be careful if you do it. Take the HT lead off the coil to make sure there is no spark whilst you do it.

Pumping the throttle does nothing, SU carbs don't have throttle pumps.

Did the car need any special help from the previous owner to start on the test drive?  Was it already warm when you tested it?
