I replaced my thermostat today as I noticed the mini getting a little warm, replaced it for a 74c instead of an 88c, made my own gasket out of a cereal box..

All seems to be good but there is a small leak coming from one of the studs and making one of the bolts slightly moist..? Is this down to the gasket? If so I'll just order one from work tomorrow  :proud:

Not a leak as such, just a little damp, for the sake of a gasket I may as well just get one I suppose

Torqued up the bolts/nuts?

Mine always leaks even with proper gasket for the first full temp run. Just tweak them up.

Gave them a tighten, but now it's been on a run might give them another tweak :-)

Is there a torque for the thermostat housing bolts? Just don't want to over tighten them  :D

I'd recommend the Kligersil Gaskets.  Probably the best you can get for the thermostat housing.  :-)

Oh and on the subject of thermostats I'd only run a 74c on a race engine as max power from an a series is generated around 70c.  With a 74c thermostat in a road car the engine oil is not as likely to get up to a high enough temperature to boil of the contaminants i.e. water.

From the evidence that I have seen and speaking to the likes of Peter Vickers and AC Dodd the sweet spot for an Engine thermostat in the UK is 82c with the consensus to maybe swapping it to a 88c in the winter if you heater doesn't get hot enough!

The 88c thermostat replaced the 82c thermostat in the UK in 1976 due to tightening emission regulations.

Its possible the cornflake box material has split on the inside of the 5/16 hole and therefore water is coming up the stud hole. Cornflake box cardboard may be ok in a emergency in the middle of no where but its better to use gasket paper to make your own in the absence of the pre stamped gasket.

I grabbed some gasket paper from work so I shall give it another go!
