Not sure if this is the right section - please move if its not!

I have a standard 1275 turbo that needs a rebuild. I have spoke to a reputable engine builder and they basically said my budget of about 3.5k isnt enough for much more than a standard engine. I was a little taken back to be honest.

I dont want to be building the engine/box myself as i have very little experience and i want someone to fall back of if anything breaks.

I would like a figure of about 120-150hp, running perhaps 10-12psi boost. I didnt think this was mad to be able to acheive this kind of power with my budget? Maybe im wrong?

The car will be running an intercooler, oil cooler, megajolt, ally rad and the car is currently undergoing a complete rebuild so has alloy 4 pot brakes, all adjustable suspension & geometry, braided fuel & brakelines throughout.

Is there anyone i can try or anyone else recommended for rebuilding this engine?

Thanks in advance.

That may be of interest to you? Have a search through the old for sale bit to gauge prices on engines.

I wouldn't rely on the hope of "falling back on the engine builder" as any damage will no doubt be blamed on you, a bad driver is a bad driver with any engine! Plus with the turbo, it's more "when" than if!

There is also Turbo Phil on there, Benross is good though!

If your going 120-150 bhp, you should have an x-pin diff there, minispares are meant to be the best really, or an LSD but as it's a budget then this may not be suitable...

*I don't mean your a bad driver, I mean that will be the builder's argument, "you did not run it in correctly" etc*

Haha yes i understand what you mean, its only there word against yours but i would rather have someone to go to than stumble through an engine build myself.

I was planning on running a cross pin minispares diff yes, and possibly s/c drops.

Thanks for your help.

The S/C drops are open to debate, have a search on TM for robert, I think he is running helical still. If you don't mind the noise though, may as well fit them! Best bet is research though :)

You can spend hours on there reading, everything has been covered on there and it is fantastic for research

it can add up

pistons £400

decent worked head £400-£600

drops £300

turbo t3 maybe £100+, GT17 £200 (ebay prices) new t3 £700+ etc you see where thats going.... but i wouldnt use a t3

carb plenum etc £120?

ph2 cam £220?

crank work £200-£300

clutch RTS about £250ish i think (cheaper if do it yourself)

I/C & plumbing £100-£200 (silicone hose is expensive)

bearings, gaskets consumables and labour maybe £500-£600

a turbo motor can be as expensive as you make it.

make sure you are clear about your budget to the guy and if they start making unreasonable suggestions then walk away.  Turbo Phil is awesome and he has done work on both of my heads and is a top guy.  Did what i asked and no more and didnt try to sell me anything more than i asked.  Benross has had good engines.  saying that there is a turbo motor for sale atm i think on TM.

reading it again 120 brake out of a 1275 with a turbo isnt realy puhing it im my opinion, so dosent need to be that high spec,  although you will undowtedly want to crank up the boost onece you have built it

if you're not going to do any engine work yourself you may as well buy a running turbo mini or look out for someone who's selling a completed engine. Pretty sure there's a chap who's selling his project on turbominis; including an unused benross engine.
