Am giving my mates mini, 1979 998cc, a bit of a refresh. One thing I noticed was the tank seems smaller than mine. It does not have the same shape, and just looks, well, smaller! I know the right hand tank is smaller, but the standard saloon left hand tank, they are all 7.5 Gallon right?

No, early cars have a 5.5 gallon LH tank. A 5.5 gallon right-hand extra tank was an option on the bigger engine cars and could be fitted to the 850 and 1000 models.

I can't recall when the change from 5.5 to 7.5 happened.

Way later than anyone ever thinks, the small tank was still fitted to low spec models until 1980.  Both large and small tanks were available '76 to '80.

Ok, thanks for that,  I was going to fit my old 7.5 tank, vented as I went to injection so its spare. Guess all I'll need is a bigger strap then.

Imagine what it was like with a Mk.1 Cooper 'S' 1275 with just a 5.5 gallon tank and only about 28 mpg in normal driving. You needed to re-fuel every 120 miles if a sensible reserve was to be left.
