Evening all

This evening after many many years of resto and rebuilding, it was time to turn over the engine.......

Problem is there is no sound from the fuel pump and no turn over.  I pulled the connector on the fuel pump and cranked the engine over while checking the voltage - and got 7.4V?!

The engine in an SC built 16v'er but on an MPI loom, i have very little understanding of the mpi electrics so dont know where to start; but would have thought i should have 12V at the pump.  But i also dont know if the fuel pump is actually functional as it is a second hand item.

Any ideas why the voltage would be low?

Many thanks

You could try putting a direct feed from the battery to test the fuel pump. I guess all the earths are good and the battery is kicking out good volts?

Well i havnt checked the battery under cranking.  It is a dry cell odyssey battery that has been sitting for a few years, but it measures 12.4 across the terminals  It cranks the starter over strongly for the first 10 seconds then starts to slow.  I will have a go at checking the pump like you said but i will need to get the tank out tomorrow i think.

Thanks for the fast reply

I would have thought a good battery should last more than 10 seconds

Could be, just assumed these dry celled batteries held there charge fairly well.  Will have a go with the jumper leads on and see if that makes a difference.  The fuel pump should still pump at 7.4V though, shouldnt it?

Not sure if the pump will work with low volts, you would think it would I guess even if not very well, direct feed will rule this in or out easy though.

Cool, sounds sensible to me - will have a go at it in the morning.  Really dont want to have to fork out for a new fuel pump, them things are expensive!

Thanks for the advice

Couldnt wait - connected the battery directly to the pump and................nothing!  Not a whisper - looks like a new pump for me then.

That'll teach me for buying an ebay tank/pump.
