Right, I know this is probably really simple and I'm going to feel stupid for even having to ask but I know nothing about what I'm trying to do and before spilling what seems to be a lot of fuel all over the place thought I'd be best asking how to do it? Any help much appreciated as ever!

quickest way is siphon it out.

you could undo the rubber hose underneath but its not a very big bore pipe and will take a while.

hose pipe down the filler neck and suck...have a couple of big jerry cans at hand ..and don't swallow the petrol.

milk is good for rinsing your mouth out if you get a quick taste.

Great, I thought that might be it... I might just go for the hose underneath

as much as I love the smell of petrol I'm not sure it'll taste as good!

I drained half a tank by undoing the rubber pipe underneath. It took a while but was fairly straight forward.

What did you catch it with? There is not much room under there to get anything decent to catch the fuel into if you want to re-use it I found. Have to do this soon to mates car, luckily its a 5 gallon tank.

Fortunately I had put the rear wheels on ramps, as I was originally playing with lights and looms, and didnt fancy stooping all day. When it came to removing the wiring loom, I took the tank out.

My dad has a proper fuel line clamp making this rather straight forward. Stuck the clamp on rubber hose. Disconnected hose and aimed into the jerrycan. Undid the clamp. Fortunately I had very little fuel left (I made sure to run it to well under half a tank.)
