The screws on the rear registration plate of my mini are rusted and ruined. I need to get a new set somewhere, but I can't get one out to measure it without breaking it! Does anyone know the approximate sizes so I can go to the hardware store?

It is on an MPI...if it makes any difference.

Thanks all

There's no standard size as they will all have been fitted in the dealership. You can get coloured nylon screw & nut sets.

Also popular for estate agents boards  :whistling:

hmm..nothing standard eh?

Well, from what I can deduce while they are still stuck in there...mine look more like sheet metal screws along the lines of this (but with slot ends):

I guess what bothers me now is that if the dealer just stuck some screws like this in my bootlid, I'll probably find that the rusties have been munching around the holes a bit!

Any advice on how to extract them?

You may end up having to destroy the plate to spare the boot lid, ie somehow get the plate out from under the screw head so that the head is then proud of the surface of the metal and you can get hold of it with self-grip wrench or similar. Maybe get the plastic really hot with a hot air gun so it just pulls over the screwhead.Or break the plate carefully into a small  bit a couple of inches square so you can revolve it and it may take the screw round with it.

What's poking out the otherside? Can you get a pair of mole grips on there and twist them to free them up a bit.

Otherwise get them out / drill, repaint bootlid and put some nice plastic screws in.
