as mentioned in another thread, i have been offered an engine from a friend (£300), its currently split so i can make out the part numbers, so what do you know about the following parts,

22g1832 gearbox casing

22g1040 stamped directly onto the top of the gearset

12g1505A crank

21251 +0.60 pistons, i know they are obviously 60 thou oversize, but are they any good?

m2 285 on the cam, i think its a piper? is this likely to be a bit too wild in a fast road engine?

it also has a "trigger" timing belt conversion on it too, i have seen a very similar one from titan, but has anyone used this particular one?

the head wasnt there today when i popped over to see it, but i have checked it our before and it looked like a nice bit of kit, well ported with bigger valves etc.

what do you think? worth a rebuild, or am i better starting from scratch? i want to put a fast road engine together, with the intention of making it to a few track days (but not many!)

The gearbox is a post '73 1275GT and I think that crank is the non-S EN16t (a really good crankshaft that one).

These bits are all well suited to a fast road engine. You don't say what the rods are, if you're lucky these will be the 1300GT type. With the gearbox the 1040 laygear indicates it has the closer ratio gearset (less of a drop between 3rd and top).

I have used the Triger belt kits in various fast road motors for over 25 years, and have found them to work well both fixed and adjustable timing versions.

I thought the 1300GT rods were the same as the 1275gt rods, which were the worst 1275 rods from standard..

They are... better off using A+ rods if you have them available, but there's nothing wrong with GT rods, just have a large counter balance weight on the cap, these obviously respond well to lightening.

For identification and differences between 1275GT and 1300GT rods check out the blue bible (1st edition of Tuning BL's A-Series Engine) page 300.
