Ask on here if you view one in case anyone is local, then you've a second opinion or help knocking prices down :)
Help knocking the prices down, I like your thinking!!
Haha! One of the guys I've been speaking to who lives relatively near me has said he'd be okay coming and inspecting it for me ![]()
I bought an unrestored 1977 mini 1000 a couple of years ago with tax and 1 months MOT left for under a grand, drove it straight away and it passed its MOT the following month without a single issue. Last week I bought a 1993 mini cooper for over twice what I paid for the mini 1000 and the cooper has been RESTORED. The car was restored on the outside but the owner didn't restore the inside i.e inner sills. These were flapping away and where the floor met the sills was missing in areas. The cooper came with a years MOT! I have spend the last week welding the car to make it roadworthy and strong as well as compile a list of other parts I need that are either damaged or missing! The best built cars imo are the 70/80's cars. After that the quality of build rapidly went downhill...
Seriously??
That's really bad! A lot of the unwelded ones I've seen have either been quite expensive or over my budget at least or just rotting in a corner somewhere. There's only been a couple that have caught my eye but the restored one I'm looking at, he's been really good and ssaid I can send AA guys or mechanics round and he's sent me the history and pictures of the restoration he's done. Sounds genuine and looks okay.
I think £3000 could buy a very nice 90s model.
The quality of the build isn't as good on the 90's as it is on the 80's though. Not that I'm picky, If I see a nice 90's then I'll get her!!
You can get decent Minis for £2500 - I sold my mini for that and it was a 1275 Stage 1 kit deseamed etc - couldn't get more than 2500 for it,
They look good!Do you still restore cars?
Doing a Van at the moment (it's a keeper though) and have a Racing Green that will be done and sold later in the year. Never welded before but it does need complete floors from tunnel out. Beautiful little car, might end up keeping it myself though!
Haha, you're just going to end up with a tonne of cars that you don't want to sell at this rate!!
Let me know when you start work on the racin Green!
I know that it would be better getting one as untouched as possible even if it is bad and doing it up but, I don't trust myself to do it properly and I'm probably going to get someones back up here but, I don't trust mechanics.
I'm just worried they'll charge me more than what they should be doing or they'll just try and fix it up quick to get the money. Sorry to all the nice mechanics out there.
To be fair, if you're not able to work on a mini yourself, then whatever state of mini that you buy, you're going to need to find yourself someone you can trust to do all that for you. All classic mini's require constant servicing and attention, so if you can't do that yourself, or don't trust yourself to do so, then you're really going to need to find someone that can. There really are some very good people out there, you just need to find someone familiar with classic cars (preferably minis) and that has a decent reputation amongst the classic mini scene.
Well, I've been looking at the basics but I definitely couldn't do any of the major stuff. I think I may have found someone who could help me with welding and stuff but either way, I'm sure I could find someone who could help me out. I would be wary if they didn't know classic cars though. Plus there's a couple of guys on here who have shown me their work already. ![]()
i bought a virtually unwelded SPI for good money... still needs a small amount of tidying but hey
What year was she and when you say for good money, what does that mean? ![]()

There's lots of unwelded mini's out there..... (like this one)
......the trick is finding one that doesn't actually need any welding doing either!!
mine has a years MOT but has only had the passenger wing and front panel corner repaired.
Oh god, that looks like bloody hard work!
