this has got me stumped......

i have got a mini in which has really poor brakes. however, the shoes and rear cylinders are new, the front discs and pads are new.

it has this type of master cylinder....

http://www.minispare...|Back to search

and has one of these pressure regulators on the bulkhead....

http://www.ukclassic...miter-valve.asp

everything is fitted correctly and i have done my dam best to bleed it all through, (had to borrow a friend for a couple of hours today to assist) whilst bleeding it does produce a really good "squirt" with allot of pressure, so i assume the master cylinder is working well.

however, there is loads of travel on the brake pedal (it doesnt feel like its got a master cylinder on the end of the pedal!)

the pedal goes down half way effortlessly, but then stops with a real "mechanical" stop, by this i dont mean its spongy, there is just nothing until half way down, then stops dead.

when i open up a bleed nipple the pedal does go all the to the floor so there isnt actually anything stopping the pedal half way down the travel. despite it feeling like it.

any ideas?

When it stops are the brakes on then ???

Have you adjusted the rear shoes , adjust till wheel is difficult to turn or even locks, then back off a quarter turn.

yes mate, i have adjusted the brakes on the back!

when the pedal reaches the "stop" the brakes are barely on. i did try the car down the road and the brakes are almost non existant.

however with the car in the air, and a friend applying the brakes, there is something happening at the front (minimal though) but at the rear nothing at all!

the thing that is so confusing about it all is the lack of any pressure under the pedal, then this solid stop.

the best way to describe the action of the pedal is that it feels like the brakes have had the lines cut and there is a small block of wood under the pedal!

Have you got the FAM valve hooked up the right way around?  Did you swap from an earlier master cylinder?  Often when you change them you have to swap the front and rear lines over depending on what one you are swapping from.

the master cylinder and teh valve on teh bulkhead were all as teh car came to me so wasnt that either.

however...........

having had another hour on it this morning, it was that valve on teh bulkhead that was playing up, switched that for another one, bled it all up again and was hunky dory!
