hi all i have changed the alternator to my old one what worked. but itsputting out 12.57 volts when engine is turning over no change when the engine is of. but i checked the other mini that we have and that is 14.23 volts when on tick over. so there has got to be something wrong somewhere i am thinking now was my alternator ok but something on the wiring is throwing it out so its not recharging? is there anything else i can check before i go and buy a new one with a higher volt. would appreciate your thought?

It should be 13.5v or more. Any less and it won't charge the battery.

Also, ballasted ignition systems were fitted to some early-mid 80s minis as a resistance wire to drop the power needed to give a spark.

mine started spluttering under load,  rebuilt the carb and it was fine, i did adjust timing at the same time ,but im prety sure it was due to the under fueling when loaded

ps, you do have some ignition issues so i would sort them before looking at the carb

drove it today tho and it hasnt splutterd since. drives lovely to be honest so not to worried about that now what would you look for if the alternator was ok? could it be something else that stops the power going to the battery?

id turn the ignition on , make sure everything if off , like headlights etc,  then get the multimeeter on everything to see if your loosing current anywhere just to check you dont have a drain on it anywhere

ile try that tomoz but what i dont get is i put the new battery on yesterday i have been starting and turning it off and done all that driving today and the volts are still the same on the battery i would of thought if it was not charging the battery then it would of drained some power out the battery by now? what i am thinking is if i buy a high output alternator put that on see if it brings it up to 13-14 volts on tick over and it should be fine? could it of been the first battery they sold me was a bad one. or is that rare to come by. many thanks tom

as you have been for a good run in it today, and you havnt called me to say its packed up, i think your alternator must be working well enough!

even on a brand new battery you wont get hours of running without the engine dying.

as the meter was reading the same on your brand new alternator as the reading given by your old one, i think its safe to say its not your alternator. it seems highly unlikely they are both slightly duff.

how many times did you switch the engine off today and fire it up again while you were out for a drive?

The alternator is the same. The ignition coil is different, and there is a different wire running to the distributor. I think it's white/pink (its been 8 years since I had a ballasted ignition car...) check the Haynes book of lies.

if you started it up that many times, and managed a run to stourport i think its safe to assume its charging!
