?? what type of car and what ignition system ?? I'm guessing you have a mpi rev counter wired to a standard car where they read double

Yup, chances are its an MPi one. I think speedy cables can recalibrate them but you bet it won't be cheap.......

Because the MPi uses a distributorless wasted spark ignition. This effectively means it has two coils, each one firing a pair of cylinders during each cycle. The MPi tacho is only connected to one of these, so it expects to see a coil pulse only twice per revolution rather than four times. When it sees four pulses, it counts two revolutions rather than one. So it will read double when fitted to a conventional 4 cylinder system.

There is no other way for them to over read so much like this really (unless someone has messed with them), they must be MPi gauges. Nippon Seiki rather than Smiths. Do they have badges identifying the warning lamps or do they just have plain coloured lenses? Smiths didn't make any magnolia faced triple gauge packs for the Mini and they were dropped as the manufacturer in 1988 I think. If they are Smiths and have magnolia faces they must have been customised by someone so they may have been modified to work with a wasted spark system in the same way.
Oh and the temperature gauge is probably not right either.

Either get it re-calibrated or fit different gauges. They aren't physically part of the dash and can be swapped for earlier ones.
