Hey all, I have a strange plug I found in my engine bay today. I have a 77 Mini 1000 (998cc) with some custom work done on the engine, but nothing extreme. I can't speak to specifics, since I've only had the car about a month, and the work was all done by the previous owner, whom I am not in contact with.

I took off the head, in order to do valve work, and replace all the gaskets. I found this plug exposed last night, and can't remember if I took it off. Also, I breifly looked in the bay, and I can't see specifically where it would go.

It's on the right side, and was tucked up in the corner next to the (wiper motor?)

Any help at identifying this would be a great help. Thanks!

I think it plugs into the back of the brake master cylinder and is the low brake fluid level switch

would the low brake fluid level be a light on the dash? And the brake resivoir is on the Left side (at least on my car) perhaps it's a legacy wire. Thanks for the help

Should plug into one of these:

It's just to let you know if you're brakes have failed, like some sort of pre-crash warning :S

Clearly it's not a '77 mini. Time the US authorities clamped down on these.

With out more detail its difficult to make a statement about the cars age.

I searched the switch linked further up and its used on this master cylinder

http://www.somerford...roducts_id=3503

detail says master cylinder for 76 - 80 cars...so seems to tally with a 77 model

As far as I know it's a genuine 77, but the master cylinder looks much different than that on Mini Mania. So there is something awry, but it doesn't seem to be affecting much. And even if it wasn't a 77, and someone fudged the title, what would the real problem be? I don't see anything wrong with it. At the end of the day, it means more people caring for and enjoying awesome cars.

From the little we can see your car looks genuine, assuming the fancy loom conduit has been added. The wires are the right colour for a brake warning switch, you can sometimes find one fitted into a "H" shaped pipe connector bolted onto the bulkhead. The warning light should be an illuminated rocker switch, the switch is only to test the bulb.

http://www.minispare.../YUF101650.aspx  note the symbol has changed, used to look like a pedal, if yours is an export model it may be a different setup again.

If it is a genuine '77 LHD model (and there is nothing here to suggest it isn't really, especially as it has the export '77 type charcoal canister fitted) it would have had the separate PDWA valve lower down on the bulkhead instead of the one built into the master.  These are hard parts to find sometimes, so it may have been replaced with the iron version instead of the genuine brass version.  In which case the connector won't fit as the two switches are different and not interchangeable.  What master cylinder is fitted?  Can you post a picture?

Best shot I have is on my wife's Instagram page here:

I'll try to take a hi res pic tomorrow morning. Master cylinder is in the upper right of the bulkhead looking in (steering wheel side)
