Hi

 

Thought Id ask about my pot joint and see if others have had the same problem.

 

Its on a 1981 1275gt . I had what looked to be oil dripping from the boot for some time, after investigating it I think a seal that is supposed to be welded at the bottom of the pot has come loose somehow and the oil is coming out of the gearbox and making its way out of the boot.

 

Has anyone else had this problem and if so Im guessing its a new pot joint needed? Whats the best way to dislodge them without the need for a special tool?

  It's not welded, just a driven-in plug but no it shouldn't move.  You do indeed need a new pot joint.  They can usually be prised out easily enough with a large cold chisel or similar by levering behind it.  They are only held by a circlip and pop off quite readily normally.  Make sure you lever against the head of one of the cover plate screws and not against the alloy plate or gearcase.  You should really change the circlip too, but nobody ever does and then they are surprised when the pot joints are reluctant to come off in the future.
