i have used brush on hammerite tons of times on engine blocks. i find it sticks really well and the finish is quite long lasting (several years)
however, its all about the preperation!
you need to get the engine, or any other bits you want to paint super clean and dry. old tooth brushes are great for getting the muck off, and you want to use something like "gunk" to spray on to get the muck off it.
i cant stress enough how important it is to get it clean. take your time and make a nice job, take as many bits off as you dare to give you access to the whole engine.
i have seen plenty bad jobs in the past and they look truly terrible, and its hard to put right afterwards.
