Just a quickie really, is there any difference between pre A+ and A+ camshafts? Basically, are they interchangeable? There's a Piper BP285 cam kit on eBay at the moment and the seller lists in the description that it's for an 'A series' engine. Also, any thoughts on this cam? cheers.

Camshaft Differences?

Yes, there are differences between the cams. A+ motors typically use a 'slot drive' cam.
Pre-A+ used either spider drive or pin drive cams. They can be interchanged in 1275 units if you also fit the corresponding oil pump.
In small bore engines (850,998, 1098) this can be more problematic.

haha i forgot about the oil pump drives! Ok then apart from the oil pump drive is there any differences to the fuel pump lobe, distributor gear or the diameter of the bearing journals?

as above the cams are pretty much all the same apart from the pump drive,
the only things that could cause an issue are...
some formula junior cams had a gear where the fuel pump lobe is, but this is soo rare your very unlikely to ever com across one.
early cams had narrower (3/8" rather than 1/2") lobes, still interchangable, but more prone to wear, not to many of those about either.
the MPI cams dont have a fuel pump lobe, instead they have a trigger for the camshaft sensor.

I think I got one with the gear..What pump should be used then?

your cam has two gears? one for the dizzy, one where the fuel pump would be?
I think these were intended for use with a dry sump pump, just ignore it and use an electric pump.

Hmm.. Is fitting an electric one hard?
Do they still sell dry sump pumps?

I saw the pic in the other thread and that does look like its a fomula junior cam, quite an unusual peice, you might be better flogging it, its worth putting a post up on the Mk1 mini forum as they will have an idea of its worth, and also what profile it is, it could be a race profile,
fitting an electric pump is pretty simple, bolt it to the rear subframe, pipe into it and out of it, and run a wire to it from a switched live.

It is the old 544 profile. Is the MK1 forum here on this forum? Or where can I find the forum?
thanks in advance!

Thanks!
When my account is activated I'll post it on there. I hope for someone to be intrested in the camshaft to be honest...
Or someone who wants to swamp it for one I can use
