Minisport have just sent round an email of Bank Holiday offers and it includes an SU Throttle Body for the SPI which seems quite cheap for a performance mod.

Throttle Body

Are these any good, it says that it increases performance by up to 10% but I am guessing that is the 50mm mpi throttle body.

Would this give any improvement on a SPI with full stage 1 kit and slightly modified head (not sure of the mods as it was already on the car and was sold as a stage 2 head)

Doh, didnt look that far.

Sums it up realy, its Minisport, show a picture of an MPI when advertising SPi as well. Doubt its a larger throttle body, Wood and Picket do one that is a modified item and they sell for around 300 notes.

Be interestin g to find out. Some one order one and see

Looks like it is no use for performance gains:

'thanks for your e-mail and we can advise that the spi throttle body we list is a direct replacement item for the standard item there are really no performance gains to be had unless of course you have a particular problem with your own.
if you're just looking to increase performance then there are many other options to choose from like modified cyl heads, performance exhaust systems, superchip icon kits, high lift roller tipped rockers etc, please ring for advise.
we hope this information is of help and interest and we look forward to hearing from you again very soon
regards'

Is the trottle body something that can yield performance gains and if so how?

It's not that there isn't enough air, its the fact that the injector runs out of squirt.

A bigger throttle gives you the 'Impression' that the engine has better response. This is because for the same pedal travel there is a larger area of the throttle open alowing more air to flow, a smaller throttle would require more pedal travel for the same air flow. Air velocity will change also

If the engine cannot consume the extra air then there is no need to fit a bigger throttle, much the same way as fitting a HIF44 on a standard 998
