Hi all,
Now I know there's already probably been about 1,000,000 of these treds but I can't find one, so please don't have a go at me, but anyway: my dad says to me that I can't park my mini in our driveway (which is surrounded in 6ft fencing) as my mini will get stolen so I have to park it over a mile away from my house in a locked secure garage. Now obviously it's safer there then at my house but I would have to walk about 10 mins to go get it, now again that's no problem but if it's raining blah blah blah. So what do you use for security, what do you suggest I get? And which is better idea?

Honestly, from all the theft threads i've read you might be better off getting an umbrella and just dealing w the walk. It beats having the car stolen.

If someone is going to steal a mini, it's not going to take a lot. I think all you can do is deter the opertunists.

Lets be fair, nothing is going to stop some blokes, a little planning and a flat bed truck. The best thing for that situation is a tracker, however these become expensive (if you are a full time student with a part time job, like me, I simply cannot afford it)

 

Simple things like wheel clamps, steering wheel lock, removal of the dizzy rotor arm, battery cutoff switch, cctv, immobiliser... it all helps.

It depends what kind of thieves you want to stop. The opportunist thief is fairly easy to deter, as mentioned above, its the more serious ones that plan in advance you have to be more weary of. One good way of stopping stuff from being stolen from driveways is to erect those posts that fold up from the ground at the entrance so the car cant be pushed off the drive.

Removable steering wheel is a good place to start. My pet favourite is using a baby monitor (I believe you can get battery powered ones) that way if anyone so much as farts near your car you will know about it. The key thing is layers of security - never rely on one thing and try and make them all simple for you to do. If something takes an hour to set every time then the chances are that you will miss doing it sooner or later. I have a range of security measures none of which take more than a few seconds if you know what they are and have the right kit. Our garage is attached to the house and the dog sleeps right in front of the mini which helps too (until he barks in the night and sets the baby monitor off!).

The garage may be secure but if it is out of the way it could mean that any potential scumbag has all the time in the world to work on it. This may sound stupid but security is not about making a car impossible to steal - short or hoards of armed guards that is almost impossible. Security is about making the risk or being caught bigger than the potential gain to the scumbag. It that respect you want things that do two distinct jobs, 1, things that delay them e.g. Locks, immobiliser and 2, things that make them more likely to be discovered e.g. Baby monitor or alarm.

Also remember that keeping it in a garage will help to keep the evil rust monster at bay so it could be worth the effort for that alone.

The ops dad is correct in thinking that the high fence only provides plenty of cover for the thieving retards to work behind, unseen from prying eyes. A nice open driveway with plenty of lighting so you, your neighbours or any passers by can see in is the best deterrent

Not much of a deterrent even then. Monte Coop on here had his stolen at 7pm on a light night on an open drive overlooked by 8 houses! Never rely on someone seeing something as security.

i imagined it as a fence surrounding the driveway so you have to open a gate or something to get vehicles on/off

Mine's on my drive, with another car in front blocking it, I feel that helps a great deal.
