Hi all. Stripped my front subframe down this weekend and removed the hubs and noticed the bearings flop about in the hub about 5mm. Looks like smaller bearings have been dropped in, I'm assuming this isnt right and they should be a press fit.

Just wondered if anyone knew the outside dimension of the bearing, so I can check my hubs when I remove the old bearings.

Tried to get some part numbers off pictures online but haven had much joy.

Hopefully someone might know or have an old set lying around to do a quick measure for me.

Cheers.

I'm confused by this, it wouldn't have driven if smaller bearings had been fitted.

You aren't getting confused with the inner and outer part of the bearing..They are made in 2 pieces..an outer race which presses into the hub, and the inner section with the roller bearings in it that locates inside the outer.

When the CV shaft is through the pair and the drive nut torqued up it pulls the whole lot together for a proper fit.

The car has never been on the road since Ive owned it so have no real idea what conditions the bearings were in.

However that said this must have been what I saw having a quick look the other day. A bit of a stupid moment!

My old bearings moved in my hub

The outer race (pressed in part) span around and moved up and down in the hub
But couldnt move side to side if that's what you mean

Will be clear when you have a closer look

Sadly, if the bearings have been moving, the hubs will be scrap. It ought never to happen, but seems to be fairly common nowadays, and I suspect that it is due to certain non-genuine bearings being made incorrectly. Best from every point of view to use genuine Timken bearings always, the cheap nasty Chinese ones that are currently on the market lead to all manner of problems. As far as we know, no-one has been killed yet by a counterfeit Chinese bearing, but it is only a matter of time.
