Hi, Out of interest are there any insurance companies who can and will fit black boxes to minis or anybody on here who has had it done particularly to older minis with carbs as opposed to injection?

I have been looking at a few comparison sites as a lot of the classic specialists are coming back with quotes so big I keep having to check its not the 1st of April! managed to find some ok quotes that didn't have a black box and also got a few more with although these were all MORE expensive!!!??? I wont have a black box in mine anyway as I do a lot of night driving, long distance driving, rush hour driving and being a mini I cant guarantee that corners will be taken as slowly as the black box might like!

I looked at a few black box quotes and read the small print and despite having given me a quote they wouldn't insure me as the car is too old (79 so will be 34 when insurance taken out). This I think is a bit naughty as Im sure that if I had I clicked to buy quote it would have let me.

Also im not sure where they could put a black box with out serious disassembly, and mini wiring is fragile enough at the best of times without some ham fisted insurance guy messing with it (no offence meant if anyone fits these boxes!).

I looked into a "black box" about a year ago, to lower my insurance. I phoned two or three companies that offer this service. All of which said that would not be offered/fitted because it was a classic car. Now I don't want you to take my word for it, as things may have changed, and I am sure there are other companies that I did not try...

As far as I understand it, they won't fit the black box to a classic mini. This is probably for two reasons; A. its a classic mini and has quirky, often unreliable wiring,  B. The wiring is so basic that you could locate and tamper with the box in about 5 minutes. Considering that they don't even let you look at where they install the thing I guess they really want to maintain secrecy. All is not lost however, if you call up a traditional car insurance company you can get some pretty amazing deals, such as myself, 18, no NCB, passed test a month a go, fully comp main driver for 6000 miles a year, small mods declared and an agreed value. All for the princely sum of £650  :D

I found that limiting the mileage, declaring parents, keeping it on the road rather than in a garage or on a driveway and not doing any modifications kept the premium low. Simply bang you details into compare the market.com, call up the cheapest and discuss with them the options. I found that a classic policy, as well as a multicar discount knocked about 35% off premium and in the end the mods cost nothing after a bit of negotiations.

Good Luck!

Adrian Flux's black boxes glue to the windscreen and then every so often (depending how much you drive) you have to charge the box from your 12v socket in the car. However, seeing as most minis lack this simple thing, it's a bit annoying so I just used a power pack for jump starting a car :P
