Mini Cooper D

2010

19500 miles

out of warranty at the end of June 2013

The stop start isn't working and I rang the dealer a few months ago and they said that it might not be working because of the cold weather or low battery.  i waited until the weather got warmer and the battery seems ok as it never caused me a problem, the stop start still not working.  I rang today again and I was told that it might not be working because the car has very low miles for it age and because of that the battery is probably low.  If i took it into the dealer for them to look at it even if its still in warranty and if they have to charge the battery I will have to get billed for it.  Is this right?

Could someone advise me on this please? Thank you.

Hey, welcome to the forum.

This is primarily a classic mini forum, but there are more and more of us one here with new MINI's on here as well so we try and help out where we can!

The stop/start system monitors all the relative vehicle systems to decide whether or not to stop the engine, ambient temperature, engine temperature, state of battery charge, air con on, fuel pressure... You get the idea. So the fault could in theory relate to anyone of these, however most faulty sensors will be easily diagnosed via the correct diagnostics gear, which the dealer will have. Knackered batteries are a common fault though, as if the battery is anything below perfect, the ECU will decide to not stop the engine in-case it cannot start the engine quick enough again.

Batteries are a wear and tear item in most warranty cases, so yeah it sounds about right that you'd be billed for it!

battery should be under manufacture warrenty, they normally have a 3 yr warrenty, but they are expensive at like 200 plus for a new 1 :(

Buy a classic mini - they frequently stop start! The less maintenance you do the more it happens, double win.

normally in the manual there is a list of items that the car needs before it switches it of on the start and stop system.

i remember for working at vw wheels need to be straight, aircon can not be at minimum, in neutral.

wreally big list.

maybe an idea to check it in the manual ?

It has the same issue I was told the same garbage by the dealers they charged the battery the start stop worked as I stopped to drive off the dealers drive it hasn't worked since !! And they tried to charge me for allegedly charging the battery told them to @@@@ off
Iv got used to it now and it doesn't bother me it's never had any further issues

Anyway the misses uses it the most I will stick to my classic mini..

Id be wary of dealers, if they charge you for a battery shop around.

We had a problem with a C3 stop/start, dealer said it was the battery and wanted a stupid amount to replace it, as it was a special battery that HAD to be fitted. We got the car back, noted the battery details, phoned some battery suppliers direct and sourced one for about 1/3 the price.
