Hi all,

took one of my wheels for sand blasting and powder coating test but mixed results

The groove rounde the outside of the wheel 'stored' some of the powder and when baked it popped and left the results shown.  Fella said he would just blast it off if not happy so no problem.

However,  if I can weld the gap shown I can have them powder coated nicely

Has anyone done this and ground down the welds to a good finnish ??  Thinking of having a go this week at welding them up.

Graham

Cant see why not ( unless someone knows otherwise ) the centre is welded in by the factory, so you are just adding to it. Carefull about how much heat you put into the wheel in case it distorts. Might look better if you can get the excess weld machined off. Think weller still sell centres and rims seperate ( motorsport use ) so you customise rim size back depth etc, so some motorsport are quite happy for you to weld rims/centres from scratch.

To be fair kinda what anon said but often in land rover world when wheels are powdercoated we've put a bead of silicone sealant around after they are done.

To be honest it just looks like he hasn't applied enough powder to fill the joint in the rim. I've seen the same thing happen on painted rims where they haven't followed the radius of the joint with the spray gun.

Either way I wouldn't touch them with a welder. You'll struggle like hell to get a consistent weld without a turntable and clamp to hold the torch steady.

They did say before doing the coating that the ridge may well bubble due to powder not baking evenly.  How would it be any different anywhere else if the ridge is the problem.  I understand what you say Anon,  and will hunt around but can't see a way round it except trying to fill the ridge with weld.

I would be very careful not to go welding them incase they warp

Can I fill the gap with a filler,  tiger seal etc, before powder coating ??   The heat will probably destroy it tho I suspect.

Nope the electric charge wont pass through seam sealer so you'll be left with a line of bare sealer.

These where the wellers we had blasted and coated at a local firm, they did it first time, and there immaculate!  I did voice my concern over the edges not filling correctly as I had heard it can happen, the guy simply said if people know what there doing it doesn't happen.

I guess he knew what he was doing.

I got my land rover wheels powdercoated by http://aerocoat.co.uk/

RAL2004 and they look absolutely amazing, really happy with them however they recommended that I put a bead of clear silicone around the join if necisary (offroading etc)
