how would i go about wiring a footwell led light to my headlight switch.... i have a strip that is going to be fixed to the back of the heater box, the car is a 1991 City 998

Relay from headlight/sidelight feed and battery positive. You may want to wire in a overide switch too - that would go in between your relay and HL/SL feed on the negative wire.
The negative from the LEDs would go to the battery negative/earthing point.
You will also need a fuse between your relay and battery positive.
(Found on internet)
(In your case, mainbeam feed is HL/SL feed)
This is how I wired small bulbs into my footwells, however, it may or may not be different for LEDs.

yup I understand the wiring, just applying it to the car seems to be leaving me a little dumb, I may have to get someone to help me a install things until I get confidence in myself ;)

I would just use a hot glue gun.
