Hi guys,

I've just bought my first mini so rather excited! I'd like to do an engine rebuild but as I'm 17 the insurance is rather dear. So I was wondering whether people could give me an idea of how long it might spend off the road, i.e. how long the rebuild would take, if I were to do it. I'm trying to decide whether to insure and drive for a bit before rebuilding the engine or whether to wait a few weeks and just rebuild it over my summer then insure it once its all ready. Once I start the rebuild I will pretty much be able to devote every waking hour to it, so working on a 10 hour day!

Cheers,

Sam

Its depends on how youre mini experienced, you can fully rebuild an A series in 2 days, but if its your first time, dont rush it and take your time, take care of every simple task, do it properly and you wont regret it. Ask for help and have a look at all the manuals and the forum, theres also a good thread on here which can help you if you're a novice:

On the other end, its better to not waste time and put a stupidly long deadline, like 3+ months for an engine build, you'll loose interest and make mistakes.

Id say drive it for a bit now, then spend your summer for the rebuild, that would be an idea, but i dont know about the insurance stuff and if you can stop it for about 2-3 months.

Cheers, I'm thinking of buying another engine so I don't have to take mine off the road for the rebuild.
