Hi,

I'm in the process of putting a new head on. I'm wondering if it's necessary to use new head studs, or if the old ones are ok to be reused.

Thanks!

You can reuse them.

Last time I did ours I removed them all and ran them over with the wirebrush in the drill just to clean out the threads and generally clean up.

It all depends on how some previous owner has used and maybe misused them. I had a recon engine once where several of the studs broke when torqued up carefully as per instructions after the first hundred miles or so, becvause obviously they had been taken beyond the fatigue limit previously, and one more load cycle was just too much.

Ordinarily they will be fine, but if one breaks, change the lot.

Tap 'em with a spanner when the head is off.....make sure they don't sound dull.

^sensible^

One advantage of having an ancient, all cast iron, engine is holding it together is less problematic, though the A+ fasteners are more sophisticated then the pre A+ ones if you have the choice.
