An earlyish Maestro with the digi dash came up on eBay and I just couldn't resist! For those of you who are not au fait with Maestro, Maestro was launched on 1st May 1983. The MG version was launched at the same time, against the advice of the engineers who weren't yet ready with the S Series engine. Therefore, the first MG 1600s (from March 1983 through to June 1984) had the R Series engine, and then in July 1984, the S Series was fitted. However, the S Series didn't last very long as the competition had moved to two litres engines and in October 1984 the 2 litre O Series engine superseded the S Series and at the same time the digi dash was dropped. This is quite a rare car now, the club think there maybe only another two or three S series MG Maestros left.
Arthur is far from perfect, but he is original and standard and for a Maestro quite solid so a good car to improve/fritter some pennies on! He only appears to be missing his stereo (he came with a Philips R570 which our RSPs use), but after research, we identified the correct stereo and managed to find one on eBay.
The first job he needs is to be set up correctly as the last owner did it himself so Arthur is off to Southam Mini and Metro Centre next week for a service, cambelt change (an easy job on an S Series apparently) and a stint on the rolling road. Then it's on to his bodywork. You would have thought having owned plenty of rusty Minis in my time I would be used to rust, but on my cars it still irritates me intensely, it just feels like it is pointing fingers and laughing at me, so I can't be doing with it. After that, it is replacing the velour on his rear seats as the top of the seats has succumbed to the sun and crumbled away. By then, I will feel that Arthur will be respectable!
Currently, he's a 10 yarder. In fact, you'll be quite impressed at 10 yards, but just don't take a step forward! Anyway, enough of me prattling on, here he is!
