Doing a resto and will be a daily driver once finished.

Checked my Haynes and I'm gonna be going with 10W40 engine oil.

It's a 998 A+ engine from the mid 80s.

The Haynes manual says that it's a tradeoff between prices, with synthetic being more expensive, but was wondering if anybody could elaborate on that?

And I take it that if i'm gonna change the oil I'll need 5L minimum?

I believe you cna only use mineral oils as the synthetic oils damage the gear box so I ance always used halfords 20/50 I think it there classic car oil

Mineral mineral mineral mineral mineral!

You shouldn't follow the advice from Haynes on this as the car is older now. If you are changing the filter as well I think you'll need 4.8 litres.

Halfords Classic 20w50 is perfect and fairly cheap. It's lovely and green and thick so it leaks less :proud:

Okay, great. I'm glad I came and asked now!

20W50 it is!

By "as the car is older", do you mean that the engine will be weaker, or that synthetic oils have changed?

Tolerances in the engine are larger than modern cars so will need a thicker oil to compensate.

Personally I recommend Millers Classic Mini Oil as it has 20W50 for the engine with additives for the gearbox. It may be more expensive but it's good stuff.

I think Halfords oil is made by Comma so it's probably the same stuff (not sure). But classic mineral oil is the way to go as not only is it cheaper than synthetic alternatives but it's designed for older cars with higher engine wear. Never had any problems and I've used it in MGs, Capris, Minis...

Saying that, oil = oil = oil. As long as you've got enough in there don't worry too much.

You can use whatever synth or mineral you've been using for ages, the problems comes mixing these two different oils as the easter will react and cause problems to the seals. If you're always been using mineral, do an engine flush before using synth.

And both halfords and comma classic are the same oil which is VERY poor, its plenty of decent oils around (ie comma sonic, millers, valvoline etc..)

Its not designed for anything belive me, its just cheap stuff with some adv on it, really poor stuff that they recicled form only god knows where and not even half decent to get an SG-SF api approvation.

Its just that all cars you mentioned are not that fussy about oils, a mini or an mg will run even with olive oil, its just that it will wear a lot camshaft and the mini gearbox.

well, the comma classic oil has done my mate good for 30,000 miles over 6 mini's. all of these engines are still operating today, so it cant be that a bad oil surely  (i'm not arguing mate!)

Always remember no modern car shares the same oil with both engine and gearbox like Mini's and older BMC/BL fwd cars........therefore whatever brand of oil you use it must have the extra gearbox additives suitable for BMC/BL transverse engines.......and only a few on sale now do.

Halfords classic runs 10-15psi lower than comma sonic after only 1500 miles in my MGB GT. I only use comma sonic now. Millers has a superb reputation but isn't cheap.

1500 miles are a lot, castrol classic was useless on my rally car after 500 miles, those so called 'classic oils' cant take any punishment and are good only for the bog standard 850 driven by the granny to tesco..
