The front is fine provided you have modified the subframe accordingly (Solid mounting the Subframe)... it will probably outlive the car, when I was talking about the fiberglass I meant the repairs you have made to the roof.

Ahh makes more sense now.. the roof repairs are only temporary i will be replacing the roof!

I only have a couple of weeks to get it off the parents drive so a roof replacement in that time is out of the question, so i have until the 9th of august to get a car that has been of the road for over 2 years MOT'd! :geek:

Either that or it will eventually rust away and i will have a roadster!

Well has been a busy week.. After Mondays diss-assembly of the clutch housing it was time to clean it up and put it all back together, would you believe it is just as much a pain in the arse putting it back together as taking apart; well it was! It all goes back together and with a bit of jigging around managed to get the engine mount back into position! Woohoo it works. All it need now is adjusting.

While it was apart it was noticed that the starter was also seized! Now my father being my father said "leave it on my bench i'll have a look when i get in tomorrow" and true to his word the next day was sat in my box of bit in a working manner! :) So that was also chucked back in and the engine was turned over for the first time! Hazzaa it lives, well it turn over! Next up is the dreaded compression test this is the live or die moment!

Cylinder Compressions:

20130723_203939_zpsf504a37e.jpg

Cylinder 4 is a little low may need some work in the near future! But should be fine to get the engine running!

After the success of the night before the Wednesday was rather dull in comparison but necessary none the less! Was the first root around underneath the car with it jacked up on axle stands to see what i could find! To my surprise it was all surface rust! So with out further a do out with the wire brush then started a 3 hour wire brushing\waxoiling marathon! I do have before and after photos but they are on my other camera will upload another day!

Thursday was meant to be an evening of as mate of Geoff-d agreed to buy my spare front subframe after his son had an a argument with a range rover and lost! (He took avoiding action up a big kerb smashing the sump and subframe! Whoops!) However i then realised that i was ment to swop the adjustabe tie rods over before it was collected, then ensued a mad rush to get them swopped! This was not to be, the tie rod bolts at the hub end impacts on the hub not allowing it to be removed without removing the hub! Dohh! So they stayed attached so the subframe! The subframe was collected had a nice chat with the guy then said hello to the missus and watched a Bond Film!

Friday arrives! After the arduous working week i decided it was time to tackle the lack of indicators.. now this is a brain bending task! Friday was a complete and utter fail.. some progress but the nearside front indicator refused to flash with the hazards! Arrgh, was only getting 1.2 volts! After many head scratching moments i retired for the evening to gather information, this involved many hours searching but finally had the information i required!

Saturday began and with renewed vigor i leap into action! The hazards didn't stand a chance! Identified the weak link!

20130726_202050_zps3cd8e9fd.jpg

The bottom connector is for the near side indicators.. the + cable that runs from the bulk head to the front indicator was to put it mildly screwed! so a new cable was run and whoop whoop we have 4 flashing bulds! Gettin! Now i feel on a role so time to tackle the non-flashing indicators! they just seem to stay on! and as they stay on there is no tick-tock-tick-tock from the flasher unit making it hard to track down! After a bit of fiddling with the stalk the indicator started to blink however the time delay between blinks was massive! Though the delay was massive it allowed me to track the flasher unit to behind the dash board! to my surprise they had fitted the wrong one! I had a 21w x 2 + 5w even though i have no side repeaters! Cue the hunt for the correct flasher unit.. Halfords, Eurocarparts, GSF car parts, for a laugh BMW! :) Nout, will have to wait for the online order!

Next up was my missus turning up with my shock mounts! This was a good surprise, however this was a good as my weekend from here on in was going to get! I then preceded to remove the old shock mount to reveal...

A BIG Hole! :ohno:

Time to leaving till Sunday methinks as it start raining!

Now Sunday is a short day due to the fact of my nephews 10th birthday party which i must attend to monitor 30 ten year old making a right mess! As per usual 10 year old girls one side of the room and 10 year old boys running around making arses of themselves! Any way i digress!

After a bit of handy work with the grinder i now have an even bigger hole! Taadaaa

20130728_121859_zps0994076c.jpg

The metal moth has taken its tole here!

Then the next 3 hours spent fashioning a new lower flange to hold the lower mounting bolts and then two plate to go over the top! this are should have been a double layer of 0.9mm steel (that's what make the hole that much more impressive, hell it even rusted a hold through the shock mount aswell!). The point came to weld the bits together and this is the first time i tested the mighty Snap-On 130 Turbo against its metal foe! It failed miserably! For the 3 minutes of welding i completed it took 1 minute of welding and 15 minutes of getting the welder working again! So it was getting time to pack up as i had to be at the party at 3! Disappointing end to an otherwise successful week or so i thought!

Later that evening the distributor arrived from Cornwall via one of my brother's (patricksouth) colleagues who will be working in Portsmouth this week! Result this means tonight will be fitting the new fuel hose and putting the dizzy in! Will it live Dr Frankinstein!!

Progress this week is slow!! After the flurry of activity last week...

Most of this week has been spent sourcing parts.. So an order for headlights, front indicators rubber seals, flasher unit, windscreen + rubber trim, gearchange mounts, oil filter and a couple of other things have been placed.

My newish welder has arrived but need some welding tips so they are on order.. so once they arrive i will get back on the shock mount

Tuesday night i attempted to get the car running but to no avail i have the dizzy in but probably not set right as i'm getting no spark found the battery was a little low so stuck it on charge!

Last night (Wednesday) i took a 60 mile round trip to pick up some wheels and tyres. Got some 12 x 5 superlights with legal tyres (just) for £80..

Hopefully tonight will be more productive the aim is to get the fuel line fitted, get some brake lights working and possibly the reverse lights (as they are fitted MOT says they must work)..

Well by Friday I had all the parts i require(or so i thought) to continue for my 3 week deadline..

To be perfectly honest i am soo tired due to all this mini activity then lying awake think of what bit i need it is exhausting! (booohoo, you can sleep when it's MOT'ed :geek: )

Well Saturday heralded a day of two halves the first half went like this:

Effin Lights why won't you just work..

I had sidelight on one side 'nout on the other then dip working but no sidelights.. when full beam was on the right side light came on and all other turned off! Grrr!

After may hours of multi-metering to identify which wire does what, cutting and replacing dodgy connectors and non existent earth cables it was almost like i discovered fire! Hazzzaaaaa! they live! So once all was confirmed the shiny new headlights were mounted into the fibreglass front followed by a cloud of fibreglass dust as i make the holes for the indicators! They were fitted with the new rubbers i bought from minispares and look ace!

20130804_180257_zps402a492e.jpg

The afternoon consisted of welding, (which is a very new skill for me) this is the first car i have ever welded and a daunting task it was!

Before:

20130728_121859_zps0994076c.jpg Big hole in shock mount!

After:

20130803_184120_zps89e2d157.jpg No Hole!

The  hole has been first plated with 1mm steel the a further 1mm plate to cover the larger area then the two plates welded together befroe then bolting the shock mount though both plates (inline with the original method) and i wasn't easy. On further inspection I decided to cut a further section out below this as a small holes was found which would have let water in so this was also repaired!

Saturday Complete!! Zzzzzzzz

Sunday involved may small things the fitting of the new wheels (mentioned later) the P-Clipping in of the new fuel hose a struggle to replace the rod change mounts (makes life much easier to drop the exhaust), afix new wiring to the reverse light switch as the had been sheered off due to both mounts being broken. Fit the new indicator relay (indicators now flash with vim an vigour rather that the laboured approach that is caused by previous owner fitting the incorrect flasher unit. Fixing the old window winding mechanism on the driver side as the window was inside the door.. Repairing the mk1 boot lid swinging numberplate light. Fit a new relay for the air horns as the old one was knacked, and clearing some of the rust inside the car and fitting seatbelts!

Now as you can see in the below picture i also fitted the wheels i bought for £80 now i bought the for the tyres but they have a greater offset to the old 12x4.5's a stick out a bit more! Eeep! because the wheel arches don't cover the front fully (let us hope the MOT tester is having a good day!)

20130804_180324_zps9c9ecbf7.jpg

Ohh an the minor task of getting the engine going.. Which did not go to plan the distributor is soo old:

20130804_175305_zps3d43b804.jpg

It's a DM2 and it has seen a few miles so i wasn't surprised to find the small cotton cover cable had rotted away and the heel on the points were so warn the it failed to maintain the correct gappage.. what i was surprised at was the smoke that started to appear not more than a few seconds after switching on the ignition to check i had electricity in all the right places! need less to say some wires have gone all melty on me  so an upgrade to a stealth electronic ignition kit is on the way! So the mystery remains does the engine work..

For this week end that is all! I am i dire need for my windscreen

Well thanks goes to TMFs Superman who put me in touch with Carl from Dorset Mini Club who had a windscreen that i could purchase.. met him to pick it up and couldn't help but admire his 1293 megajolt clubman.. it was very nice indeed! With best wishes from DMC i set off with my newly acquired windscreen..

An evening of fun and Fairy Liquid awaited me! (Other brands of washing up liquid are available) << for impartiallity reasons :)

After many hours (2) the old smashed screen was out and the new one was in! Hoorray!

1 step closer..

While i am here i would like to also pay thanks to Jurassic Coast Mini Club who went a spammy to their members on my behalf! It lead to getting atxt from a guy called Edd offering to get me a windscreen from one of his suppliers! What is funnier is Edd turned iut ti be the guy who sold me my first Dorset mini project about a year ago which ended up going back due to some irregularities.

Anyway i digress.. the only thing better than a mini is a mini owners club. You are all brilliant and i hope i shall make it to Poole Quay on Friday to thank you all in person!

Apologies fir the lack of pictures tonight i am writing this on the mobile as the missus sleeps next to me.. Hang on better go she is stirring!

First things first a picture of the new windscreen!

20130805_210939_zps2be3cf12.jpg

Best part of this windscreen! It's not smashed!

Now today's activities.. well first thing this morning was roll the car out and hammer on the locking wheel nut remover and get shot of the last two wheels! The car now sits happily on its new (to the car) wheels.. Next up Wheel Arches.. I have gone with standard black mini arches which cover the wheels fine on three corners but the front near side wheel stick out about 1/2 and inch more than to offside!?? I don't get it!

Anyway after the fitting of the wheel arches came lunch which was extended as the postman normally arrives between 12:00 and 13:00! Now he did arrive but NO accuspark ignition was in sight  :sneaky: This was annoying as the eBay company said "Fast and Free" will be with you Tuesday or Before!! So I am somewhat dissapointed.. hoping it arrives tomorrow because with no engine i cannot MOT or make it to the Quay for Friday!

After my dissapointment i cheers myself up with a trip to B&Q.. this was to source bolt, nuts & washers to fill the holes left by the rollcage that once resided in the back of Japan.. B&Q as always had the bolt for the job. Next stop Halfrauds! A tin of spray paint and a few sheet of Wet 'n' Dry later i am winging my was back to the mini!

The afternoon consisted of:

Removing bonnet pins replacing with new ones..

Grinding the sharp edges off the bonnet and cutting holes for the front bonnet pins

After several test fits the bonnet was taken off rubbed down an given a coat of matt black to improve it's shabby appearance!

The rear bumper was fitted and cleaned

Exhaust was revitalised with a coat of silver paint to cover the rustiness!

The underside waxoiling was completed.

Interior was tidied..

Seatbelts mounted

Seats cleaned and back seat put in.

Roof was also given a quick spray (i don't look great but is a darn site better than it was!)

Front grill fitted

Number plates mounted (in a fashion)

So after all that i believe he is MOT ready (in body form anyway), hopefully can get the engine running tomorrow! If it doesn't run that is me scuppered but crossed fingers that its good!

Here are some piccys of a tidier Japan!
