Hello all,

I was think off modifying my steering column so that i don't have anything but the column and wheel, all switches and buttons on a works style dash...

And the ignition key on the switch panel...

has anybody done this? Is it 'doable' ?

Many Thanks,

Iain.

only thing i can think of is some way of unlocking the steering lock, that might make it look abit untidy, apart from that i cant see any reason why not

What about the indicators? I wouldn't fancy leaning forward everytime i wanted to change lanes etc etc. Just a thought

I have thought about both of these aspects and i doubt i will be able to have the steering lock, is the mechanism for this inside the S/C cover?

The indicators, i would have, would be on flick switches with the 'mk1/cooper s' switch extensions on.

The only reason i was thinking about doing this, is for a more 'racey' 'track-day' look...

Perfectly 'doable' .  You can remove the steering lock and (if you can find one) use a Mk. 1 shroud to tidy things up.  But, as GTI Alex asks, will you be happy with indicators some distance away?

Question really is, do you use the car on the road or on the track (and most production car racers use their indicators to help other drivers)?

I use my car on the road... But i really like the style of a 'track' mini.

I feel that if the indicators were on the right hand dash panel of a 'works' dash, with the flick switch extension, it wouldn't be much more hassle to use them, in my opinion.

Where could i pick up one of these mk1 shrouds?

Iain.

Dependant on the year of your mini, look into the legal aspect of having no steering lock, I believe the law requires you have one, or maybe just MOT's, but it's worth looking as I have thought about this before!

from the MOT testeres manual:

The inspection of the steering lock only applies

to passenger cars with:
 a steering lock fitted as standard by the manufacturer, and
 four or more wheels, and
 not more than 8 passenger seats excluding the driver’s seat, and
 first used on or after 1 September 2001

I believe that's the old MOT manual and the new rules require a steering lock on any vehicle where it was fitted as standard.  They do allow it to be replaced with a suitable immobiliser if it's been removed.  This is also the legal requirement under the C&U regs, the car must have an interlocked immobiliser that will fail safe.

Would it auto cancel?

It would be fairly simple to arrange a 15 or 30 second timer on the system.  But a wheel mounted switch would be far better than dash mounted.

Ill check the mot manual tommorow, then look at the rfr's regarding steering lock, and report back

I have been running a 10" steering wheel for the last 6 months, this doesn't self cancel my indicators.. And it really doesn't bother me
