Hi all, I just wanted to make a quick post to stress the importance of correctly using a lock tab washer.I recently changed my clutch on my mini and afterwards had a whole host of problems and noises. I had torqued up the flywheel retaining bolt but re used a tired lock tab washer. Anyway, to cut a long story short the other day my engine locked up when I was trying to start it. I removed the bell housing to find this, a loose flywheel bolt!!!! The lock tab washer had totally flattened! This doesn't just apply to the flywheel, ANY bolt that needs a lock tab washer should have one and if you have any doubts about the washer, REPLACE IT!!!!! I sure have learnt my lesson

I wonder if these new lock tabs are a little soft? I now use a thread compound.

Where are they made?

The lock tab is actually floored engineering. I fit these bolts without the soft lock tab. Use a thread locker and no tab, tighten to 140lbft and you will never have a problem.

In herently the lock tabs are soft. The tab then crushes under the load of the bolt. The pressure is then released on the bolt. The bolt comes loose. Modern cars use flange bolts for 2 reasons. Cheaper to produce ie no lock tab and more reliability.

People ask why I don't use locktabs in gearboxes...

AC has so eloquently put it above that I need say no more.

Uhm, people forget that washers have material standards too.
